16 Questions to Ask Before Buying a Used Commercial Truck

Electrician Vehicle Dimensions, Capabilities & Features

Exact dimensions for all commercial vehicles will vary by vehicle type, make, model, body style, and year. The vehicle you choose for your business will depend on your preference and budget but also the type and amount of equipment you need to carry, store, and tow.

Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind:
  • Vehicle size: What type of equipment will you be transporting? How much space do you need? Our pre-owned trucks and cargo vans come in a range of sizes. Make sure you choose a vehicle that can accommodate all your equipment (and passengers, if needed).
  • Cargo capacity: Truck beds will vary in length and width. Our pre-owned cargo vans have a cargo capacity range of 123-462 cubic feet.
  • Gas vs. diesel: Diesel-equipped vehicles have a higher acquisition cost, but may be a better investment if you consider the total cost of ownership. While it’s important to take average gas and diesel costs into consideration, remember that diesel engines typically have a longer service life when properly maintained. Also, keep mileage in mind. Typically, 30,000 to 35,000 is a good base to start seeing the advantages of a diesel engine.
  • Mileage: Are you looking for a pre-owned vehicle with a specific mileage? Most of our trucks and cargo vans have a range of 19,000 to 50,000 miles, but some have fewer or more depending on the vehicle.
  • Off-roading: If your job requires a lot of off-road travel, consider a pre-owned truck. They are ideal for extensive off-roading as they often have four-wheel drive and sit higher off the ground than a van.
  • Reliability: Research the makes and models you’re interested in, and see how they fare in terms of awards, ratings, and reviews. See if there have been any recalls, and if so, how many.
  • Seating: How many passenger seats do you need? Regular cab, extended cab, crew cab, and extended crew cab trucks offer different types of seating and cargo configurations. You can upfit your vehicle to include additional seats or jump seats.

Electrician Vehicle FAQs

Q: What are the best vehicles for electricians?
A: Our recommendation is a cargo van. As far as makes and models go, we only carry reputable brands (Ford, RAM, and Mercedes-Benz to name a few), which means the “best” vehicle will largely depend on your business needs and budget.

Some of the most popular small (city) cargo vans are the Ford Transit Connect, RAM ProMaster City, and Nissan NV 200.

When it comes to large cargo vans, we recommend the Ford Transit, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Freightliner Sprinter, Chevrolet Express, the GMC Savana, RAM ProMaster, and the Nissan NV2500.

If you need assistance, don’t hesitate to contact us. We also recommend refining your search criteria on our inventory page if you’re looking to narrow down your options.

Q: How many miles will a cargo van last?
A: It depends on the van’s overall condition and how well the vehicle has been maintained. A cargo van can last anywhere from 250,000 to 300,000 miles (with some lasting even longer).

Q: What should I look for in a used electrician vehicle?
A: You want to make sure the vehicle fits your needs and budget. Is it comfortable? Does it have enough room for you, your equipment, and any passengers? Mileage is also an important factor, especially if you plan on driving long distances. Ideally you should visually inspect the vehicle and look for signs of rust or damage.

Q: Is the vehicle history available?
A: Any reputable dealership will provide you with the CARFAX report for any vehicle, which details previous owners, any accidents or damage, and overall vehicle history.

Q: What are the best vehicle upfits for electricians?
A: Some of the most popular upfits include floor drawers, ladder racks, and contractor rig racks. Upfits, however, will depend on your needs. There are a lot of options, which means we can help you customize your vehicle to your exact specifications.

Q: How much will a pre-owned cargo van or truck cost?
A: The cost of any pre-owned vehicle will depend on a handful of factors — the make, model, mileage, and overall condition of the vehicle. The majority of our cargo vans fall within the $25,000 to $35,000 price range, but there are options above and below those numbers. Our pre-owned trucks range from $30,000 to $50,000.

Q: What is the typical mileage on a pre-owned truck or cargo van?
A: The mileage will depend on how often the vehicle was previously driven. Our inventory features vans and trucks with fewer than 1,000 miles and more than 100,000. You can search our inventory by mileage, which makes it easy to narrow down your options.
